I am not an anti-screen parent but one who creates healthy boundaries with screen time in our household.
We recently went on vacation on an 11-hour road trip and packed their tablets as well. To avoid my children becoming overstimulated and be parents who wanted a peaceful car ride. I packed a total of 8 activities.
Here are three things I kept in mind when shopping for activities:
- Can these activities be used more than once?
- Is this a messy activity?
- Will this activity take up a lot of space?
This blog post is all about Fun Road Trip Activities for 4-year-olds and 5-year-olds.
Road Trip Activities
1. Clipboards
Having clipboards on hand will make it easier for your child to color or write.
I purchased these from Walmart.

2. Reusable Stickers
Reusable sticker activity books are always my kid’s favorite. They can help your child strengthen their fine motor skills. A bonus for your child is if you find an activity pack that has your child’s favorite character or objects.
Activity packs I purchased:
Reusable Sticker Books: 3 Sets
Melissa & Doug Puffy Sticker Play Set – On the Farm – 52 Reusable Stickers
Bluey Sticker Playset, 35+ Reusable Puffy Bluey Repositionable Stickers

3. Writing Practice Activities
You can have your child practice writing their name and letters on white paper or upgrade to an LCD writing tablet.
I purchased a pack of 2:
2 Pack LCD Writing Tablet with Stylus

4. Magnetic Activities
Two different Magnetic Activities I packed.
The first one is Magnetic Dot Art from Target. Check it out: Chuckle & Roar Magnetic Dot Art Designer Travel Art Kit.
The second is Melissa and Doug Magnetic Puzzle.

5. Water Wow Books
These have always been my go-to activities when we do an outing to a restaurant. All you need is water in the pens!
Melissa & Doug Water Wow! – Water Reveal Pad Bundle

6. Color Wonder Mess-Free Sheets
The number one reason to love these sheets is because they are mess-free! No marker stains on the car seats or the car.
I recommend purchasing the packs that already come with markers.

7. Coloring Books
You can never go wrong with packing some coloring books. The places I purchased these from are Dollar Tree, Walmart, and Five Below.
Instead of packing crayons or markers, I purchased twistable crayons.

8. Books
You can find books that your child can flip through. I went to my local Savers Thrift store to purchase new books for my children.
I Spy books are also great! Here are a few:
I hope the list inspired you to create a bag of fun, screen-free activities for your road trip.
