October is the month when we start to feel the onset of the fall season, marked by changes in weather, the transformation of leaves, and the arrival of the pumpkin patch season. With my little ones, I love weaving seasonal books into our learning. In addition, book companions not only make learning fun but also help nurture their love for literacy.
These three book companion activity packs focus on literacy and are designed for families or classrooms with children in preschool through first grade. My goal is to make October learning fun and engaging with hands-on activities.
The following books inspired these October Book Companion Activities:
- Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson
- Little Blue Truck Halloween by Alice Schertle
- Happy Pumpkin Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff
Lastly, the three books I chose are great for October because they are full of seasonal charm, pumpkins, broomsticks, and Halloween costumes. The book companion activity packs are for children to build early literacy skills like sequencing, rhyming, and storytelling. Along with practicing their fine motor skills. Activities that will help the child build strong fine motor skills are Play-Doh, books, and cutting and gluing worksheets.
Some ideas these activity packs can be used:
- Literacy Centers for Classroom
- Morning Basket Activities for Homeschooling
- Family Read Aloud, followed by the activity

October Book Picks and Activities

Happy Pumpkin Day, Mouse! Book Companion
This story is a favorite in our home because it’s short, sweet, and follows Mouse as he paints pumpkins. Along the way, it introduces different emotions, giving children a fun and simple way to talk about feelings. It’s also a sweet reminder that fall is the perfect time to decorate or paint a pumpkin together.
Activities included in this book companion pack:
- Sequence Activity
- Drawing Activities
- Play-Doh Emotions Book
- Fill in the Blank Activity
- Tracing Activity
- Craft Activity

Little Blue Truck Halloween Book Companion
Another favorite for this season is Little Blue Truck Halloween. In this story, Little Blue takes readers on a delightful autumn ride to visit his animal friends, each dressed up in a fun costume. Children love lifting the flaps to discover which animal is hiding underneath, and the simple rhymes make it easy for preschoolers and kindergarteners to follow along. Not only is it engaging and interactive, but it also builds anticipation and excitement for Halloween.
Activities included in the book companion pack:
- Sequence Activity
- Drawing Activity
- Cut and Glue Character Activity
- Fill in the Blank Activity
- Tracing Activity Sheet
- Card Activity

Room on the Broom Book Companion
Lastly, “Room on the Broom” is a wonderful choice for children learning about rhyming. Unlike the shorter books mentioned earlier, this story is a bit longer, but it keeps young readers engaged with its playful rhythm and repetition. The tale follows a kind witch who faces a series of obstacles, yet along the way, she meets new friends who join her on her broom. In the end, those very friends come together to save her from a fierce dragon, showing children the value of friendship, teamwork, and kindness.
Activities included in the book companion pack:
- Sequence Activity
- Drawing Activity
- Fill in the Blank Activity
- Rhyming Activity Worksheets
- Tracing Activity Sheet

Not only do these book companions help children practice important literacy skills like sequencing, rhyming, and comprehension. The three books I mentioned also make learning feel festive and fun. In addition, they’re easy to weave into your daily rhythm, whether you’re reading together at home, adding activities to your homeschool routine, or incorporating them into the classroom.
