Tips for Getting Preschool at Home Started
Learning Style
The question you want to ask yourself is… “How does my child learn best?”
Other questions to think about before purchasing a curriculum:
- Does your child like to learn through reading?
- Is your child more hands-on when they are learning?
- Are they sensory play-driven?
- Do they love music and dancing?
- Does drawing and painting play a big role in their way of learning?
Connect, play, read, and do all the activities you think your child might enjoy. It will help lay a strong foundation for their future homeschool years. As well as figure out their learning style.
Don’t get peer-pressured into purchasing a curriculum right away! Trust your gut!
In my personal opinion and experience, you do not need a curriculum for preschool. Pinterest is a great tool for you to find inspiration and ideas for your preschool at home lessons. Another great site that has free printables is Teachers Pay Teachers.
Learning Tools
This is simple, here are a few things I consider learning tools:
- Play-Doh and Play-Doh Tools
- Sensory Bins
- Kinetic Sand
- Puzzles
- Art Trays
- Journals for Activities
- MathLink Cubes
- Counting Bears
- Magnetic Alphabet Letters
- MAGNA-TILES
- Dry-Erase Board
- Stickers
It does not have to be fancy learning tools. I have purchased my items from Dollar Tree, TJ Maxx, Amazon, Marshalls, Hobby Lobby, and Michael’s craft store.
Daily Rhythm
Teaching preschool at home does not require you to do a lot of sit-down learning. Different ways you can break up your learning throughout the day:
- 15 min in the morning and 15 min in the afternoon
- 30 min in the morning
- 25 min in the afternoon
Our children’s attention span when they are 2 years old, 3 years old, and even 4 years old is minimal. You will be able to get a lot of learning done in a short amount of time.
Divide the subjects during the week, for example:
- Monday: Phonics
- Tuesday: Counting
- Wednesday: Nature/Science
- Thursday: Phonics
- Friday: Counting
It can be overwhelming if you go for all the subjects in one day. Teaching one subject a day can be a slow introduction to sit-down focused learning. If your child is ready for more subjects in one day… you can always add another subject.
