Are you thinking about homeschooling? If yes, I hope the tips I mention are helpful to you in starting your homeschool journey. Let’s get chatting about homeschool for beginners tips!
Before we get into sharing the tips I have found helpful. I want to share my knowledge about homeschooling. By no means am I calling myself an expert. I decided to create this post to share my insights with other parents who want to homeschool, but don’t know where to begin.
This post is all about Homeschool for Beginners.
Homeschooling Tips
Where to find your State Laws
The first step is to know your homeschooling state laws. Every state has different requirements for homeschooling. Certain States have low regulations, while others have higher ones.
HSLDA.org is the website where you can look up your state laws.
Other resources they have:
- Parents with Special Needs Children
- What to Teach your Child
- Help with Recordkeeping
- Grading
- Grants for Homeschooling
- Legal assistance if needed
WHY are you homeschooling?
The reason to choose a homeschool education for your child will look different for every family. I say this because sometimes, as a first-generation homeschool family, you will have a lot second thoughts.
I have a list of reasons for choosing a homeschool education for my children.
My number one “WHY” is more family time.
On the hard days of homeschooling, remember your “whys.” Homeschooling will not always be a smooth ride, but having the list of why you chose this route is a reason to keep going.
Homeschool Style of Learning
Before you choose a curriculum, observe your child and see how they learn best. Three things to consider about a learning style: is your child a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner?
Few homeschool styles to use in your home:
- Unschooling
- Classical
- Charlotte Mason
- Montessori
- Waldorf
- Deschooling
- Unit Study based
You don’t necessarily have to choose just one approach. Getting a little bit of each learning style for your child is an option.
Remember, your homeschool journey will be different than everyone else’s. Choose the curriculum and learning style that best fits your child’s needs.
Where to find Homeschool Community
Choosing a homeschool education can sometimes be lonely. A way I have found community is by joining local Facebook homeschool groups.
Search local homeschool Facebook groups by looking up your city or county with the word “homeschool group” at the end. If you don’t see your city or county, you can always ask in a group if there are families in your area.
Another way is the local church community or local events specific to homeschoolers. Or get out of your comfort zone and ask other moms if they are homeschoolers at the library! (I’ve done this)
Lastly, Homeschool Co-Ops!
Co-op stands for Co-Operatives. Homeschool Co-Ops are where groups of families all get together. Children are co-ops who learn and socialize with one another. The teachers in the co-op are moms who homeschool their children.
Homeschool community can be found anywhere. You are not alone in your homeschool journey!
