3 Actionable Steps to Ease Back Into Homeschooling After the Holidays
1. Refresh Your Homeschool Space
Refresh the learning space you have. When you have an organized and clean learning space, you can think of new ideas, plan for the day or week, and teach your child(ren).
Few Tips on How To Refresh:
- Get rid of items that did not serve your child in the last 6 months
- Buy New School Supplies If Needed (essential and not something that will break the bank)
- crayons
- pencils
- markers
- drawing pads
- printer ink
- Get yourself a planner to stay organized with homeschool lessons (if you don’t have one)
- Reflect on what worked best the first semester
- Reflect on what did not work the first semester
- Look over the curriculum and see if it is still a good fit for your child
- Set Goals that you want to accomplish with your child(ren) for the semester
2. Start Slow
Take your time to ease back into a rhythm/routine. Don’t rush into homeschooling lessons if you or your child are not ready to be back into the rhythm/routine you had before the holidays.
Ideas on How to Start Slow the first week or two:
- Have a Slow Morning with your child(ren)
- Do Arts & Crafts instead of Core Subjects
- Spend Time Outdoors (if the weather is nice)
- Take a Walk or two
- Have a Picnic Outside
- Take a Trip to the library and check out books for the month
- Start with a New Read Aloud
- Make the Grocery Trip a learning experience
Take it slow to avoid burnout. Set yourself up for success and not burnout.
3. Teach One Subject A Day
If you are ready to get back into teaching the core subjects but not all of them, I have an idea for you. Focus on one subject a day instead of 2 or 3.
Here are some examples:
- Focus on Phonics/Letters
- Focus on Math/ Play-based Activities
- Focus on Writing/ Fine Motor Activities
- Focus on Crafts/Painting
- Focus on Sensory Play/ Play-Doh
- Focus on Science
