Before I begin discussing the curriculum my 4-year-old uses, I want you to ask yourself two questions:
- “Is my child ready for more structured sit-down work?”
- “Do I know my child’s learning style?”
As parents, we are very excited to start homeschooling our children. But we also have to take a step back and consider our child’s learning style.
Before introducing my 4-year-old to a workbook-structured curriculum, I took on a play-based learning approach for preschool and the first few months of her pre-k homeschool learning.
After the first semester of pre-k homeschool, I concluded that my daughter learns in various ways. The homeschooling styles we incorporate are Charlotte Mason, Montessori, Nature, and Unschooling.
Now, let me show you the pre-k curriculum I use for my 4-year-old.

Phonics
The curriculum we use is Explore the Code. It is a 3 part series: Book A, B, and C that all teach early literacy.
Top 3 reasons why I love it:
- It is easy for my 4-year-old to follow, not overwhelming for her
- Focuses on the phonemic awareness of a letter and repeats it throughout the lesson
- Variety of ways of tracing and practicing writing the letters
Lastly, I love this curriculum because it is affordable. I purchased all sets from christianbooks.com.

Lessons include a link to prior knowledge, separate sections with specific instruction for phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing (some activities reference using the Wall Chart and Activity Book or Card set), as well as instructions for completing the pages in the student workbook. Additional notes for differentiating instruction by learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) are also included, along with challenge exercises. Math
The curriculum we use is Dimensions Math Grade PK Set. There are 2 sets available: Dimensions Math PKA and Dimensions Math PKB.
Top 3 reasons why I love it:
- It takes a non-traditional approach to learning math with a concrete, pictorial, and abstract style
- Different visuals of what a number can look like (Example: Number 3 in dots, animals, squares)
- Encourages counting with coloring in the amount it is asked

Writing
The only thing I use are dry-erase workbooks.

- Pre-K Wipe-Clean Workbook
- Wipe Clean Workbook: Pen Control and Tracing
- Wipe Clean Workbook: Uppercase Alphabet
Extra Activities
Activities my 4-year-old does that is not curriculum-related:
- Read Books together
- Play-Doh Mats
- Crafts
- Puzzles
- Watercolor Painting
